Why thank you for noticing. I happen to find it rather impressive as well. No small amount of work went into any part of it, especially back home. Afterall, I only started living on land a couple of years ago. So, there were other obstacles I've had to overcome on top of my classes and my duties as a house warden.
[Flushes a light shade of blue, leaning back in his seat ever so slightly and trying not to choke at the pretty comment]
A-ah.....I do not know about that being why? Landfolk and merfolk each have their own charms, afterall. That said...I am from the Coral Sea. I see someone must have mentioned as much....?
[Ah! Power balance restored! Maya has no shame about complimenting people, much like Kalim, so he's able to power through what is an awkward moment for Azul. Rip.]
Kalim told me he goes to school with all kinds of people, like fae, and beastmen, and mermen! Which, okay, probably sounds really normal to you now that I'm hearing myself say it out loud, but—
we don't have mermen where I'm from! This is like, meeting a magical celebrity!
[Looks around for help-Wait....none of these asshole would help me. Swallows a bit, smoothing out his clothes and sitting up straighter, trying to collect himself again.]
Aa....merfolk are rather rare to landfolk back home as well. There are far fewer of us and even then, a very very small percent actually choose to live on land and go through with it. There is a fair amount of control around the potion that allows us to have legs. And even if one does have access to it, it is rather expensive and lasts for a mere three days...at least until recently. With recent advances it lasts upwards of a week. Having been chosen by the mirror, however, that potion is paid for by an organization founded quite some time ago by a member of merfolk royalty. A princess of ours that fell in love with a human prince.
Well....yes. It's a lot of work. Most worthwhile things are, after all. Besides that I do also have to handle when students cash in their point cards. I also dabble in stocks. And grades are still important, so I make sure to stay in the top ten regardless of my other activities.
Daily life can be simple if one wishes it, but that has it's own cost. If you are all right with not shining, then one can enjoy an uncomplicated life. I want more.

You are... really industrious! That's— super impressive.

Living on land?!
You're— the merman classmate!
[just like Kalim said! Pointing at Azul as if this proves a point to a conversation he was not privy to;]
That's why you're so pretty!

[So cool Maya's temporarily forgotten about the whole envy bit.]
It sounds like it must have been a lot of hard work to earn an opportunity like that and run a whole business.

Well, it sounds like you certainly have the drive to make it happen.
Or maybe you're just already shining as it is?
